Learning is better when it’s memorable… and post-worthy 📸✨
I created this 20 question pre-test to be given at the start of the year. It is designed to assess students’ understanding of place value of whole numbers, decimals, multiplication of three digits by two digits, division and other standards that all new York State students are expected to meet by the time they enter fifth grade. I believe in transparency so the points are listed next to each question. Each varying in point value according to bloom’s taxonomy. The more computation and comprehension a question requires the greater the question’s point value.

☻
1. Instruction
Instruction is the foundation of what math teachers offer—clear, structured delivery of mathematical concepts in a way that builds understanding over time. This includes direct teaching, modeling problem-solving strategies, and guiding students through new material step by step. Effective instruction meets learners where they are, adjusts for different skill levels, and ensures students don’t just memorize procedures but actually understand the “why” behind the math.
❋
2. Intervention
Intervention focuses on closing learning gaps and supporting students who need additional help. Math teachers provide targeted support through small groups, one-on-one sessions, or differentiated strategies to address specific misunderstandings. This service is critical for rebuilding confidence, strengthening foundational skills, and preventing students from falling further behind as concepts become more complex.
✦
3. Enrichment
Enrichment expands learning beyond grade-level expectations, giving students opportunities to explore math more deeply and creatively. This might include challenging problem-solving tasks, real-world applications, math competitions, or advanced concepts. Enrichment keeps high-achieving or curious students engaged while fostering critical thinking, innovation, and a genuine love for mathematics.
4. Assessment
Assessment involves evaluating student understanding to inform instruction and track progress. Math teachers design and use quizzes, tests, observations, and performance tasks to measure learning outcomes. More importantly, they analyze this data to adjust teaching strategies, provide feedback, and ensure every student is moving toward mastery. Assessment isn’t just about grading—it’s about guiding growth.Assessment involves evaluating student understanding to inform instruction and track progress.
